Rhythm Notes
What we learned about rhythm while building Two Beat: why Korean drum rhythms sway, why the kkwaenggwari gong drives samulnori with off-beats, and why people tap before the beat. Press Listen anywhere in the articles to hear the rhythms.
What you will find here
Janggu rhythms: learn them by saying them teaches five essential Korean rhythm cycles — semachi, jajinmori, jungjungmori, gutgeori and hwimori — through their drum syllables. Kkwaenggwari off-beats and jjaksoe shows how the small gong of samulnori darts between the beats and duels with a second gong. The science of rhythm feel covers tapping research and how to sync a rhythm game.
Every sound is synthesized live in your browser with the same instruments as the game — no audio files at all.
Then play it
Two Beat is a free two-button rhythm game for the web. In the janggu mode you play jangdan with gong, drum and jing; in the Rhythm Playground you trade rhythms with a robot, ending in a kkwaenggwari jjaksoe duel.
